#2 Szymanski/ Reese - All That I Have
There’s a moment while Reese has the detective’s head in his lap, while they’re waiting for the ambulance, when the man looks up with clear eyes into Reese’s face and has enough sense to be curious. He was smart, a good cop, Reese thinks - Carter trusted him anyway and he’d taken this hole in his gut protecting a mafia boss of all things.
And Reese put him there. It’s a notion that sticks with him. It’s a notion that sticks with him when the sirens become audible and he realizes Detective Szymanski has passed out, and Carter is telling Reese to get out of there before she has to arrest him.
It doesn’t take Finch much doing to find out what hospital the man winds up in, and after everything, after the whole long day it’s all Reese can do to sneak in at the wee hours of the morning and sit down at the bedside and look at all the mess he’s made.
"I would give all that I have to not have made this mistake," he says, but there’s no answer, not the barest flicker of recognition. He’s probably drugged so deep he’ll forget the last three days ever happened.
Reese leaves flowers, and wishes he could.
